"House In The Horseshoe"

The House In The Horseshoe is one of the first big houses of upland North Carolina frontier country.  It was built around 1772 and is also known as the Alston House having been the home of the Whig Colonel Philip Alston.  It was also the home of NC Governor Benjamin Williams who served four one-year terms as the state's governor and a colonel under George Washington.

A Revolutionary War skirmish took place there and its walls still bear numerous scars and bullet holes.

This documentary video takes you on a tour of the home and grounds, gives some history on the inhabitants of the house, and shows a reenactment of the skirmish that took place there. 

The Alston House is an historical landmark and is open to the public year round.
